Falling behind early to the Washington Redskins, the New Orleans Saints became a one dimensional passing team last week, and not in an effective way. Drew Brees completed just 24 of his 52 passes, which was good for just a 46% completion rate and just 6.5 yards per catch. For the game the Saints attempted just 10 rushes for a total of 32 yards. Penalties also played a part in the disparity for the Saints offense. The Saints were penalized 12 times for a total of 107 yards which led to just a 18% third down conversion rate. Defensively, New Orleans allowed rookie Quarterback Robert Griffin III to throw for 320 yards on just 19 for 26 passing which was good for a 12.3 yard average. Griffin also rushed the ball 10 times for an additional 42 yards.

It’s a similar story for the Carolina Panthers. Carolina fell behind 10-0 in the first quarter against Tampa Bay last week and became a throw only offense. For the game, Carolina rushed just 13 times for a league worst 10 total yards. While the Panthers were never out of the game, they were unable to slow down the Buccaneers running game which finished with 130 yards on 36 attempts. The running game allowed Tampa Bay to enjoy a 15 minute advantage on the time of possession, which limited Cam Newton’s opportunities to score.
